Tabari

Tafseer of The Believers · Al-Muminoon · 23:75

And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.

(And if We had mercy on them and removed the affliction that is upon them): Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: If We were to have mercy on these people who do not believe in the Hereafter, and were to remove from them the famine, the drought, and the affliction of hunger and exhaustion — لَلَجُّوا فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ (they would surely persist in their transgression): that is to say: in their obstinacy and insolence toward their Lord. يَعْمَهُونَ (while they wander blindly): that is to say: they wander to and fro.

As al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning the words: وَلَوْ رَحِمْنَاهُمْ وَكَشَفْنَا مَا بِهِمْ مِنْ ضُرٍّ — he said: "The hunger."
