But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path.

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: And those who do not believe in the resurrection after death, the establishment of the Hour, and Allah's requital of His servants in the Hereafter — عَنِ الصِّرَاطِ لَنَاكِبُونَ (they surely deviate from the path): they deviate from the lofty road of truth and the straight way — that is the religion of Allah which He has approved for His servants. One says, "So-and-so (fulān) has deviated from this or that" when he turns away from it — and "nākib ʿanhu," that is to say: he deviated from it.
In keeping with what we have said spoke the exegetes as well.
Mention of those who said this:
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the words: عَنِ الصِّرَاطِ لَنَاكِبُونَ (they surely deviate from the path): he said: "The ones who deviate."
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the words: وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ لا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالآخِرَةِ عَنِ الصِّرَاطِ لَنَاكِبُونَ (And indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter surely deviate from the path): he said: "Ones who deviate from the truth."
