Indeed in that are signs, and indeed, We are ever testing [Our servants].

And His statement: إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَاتٍ (Truly, in that are signs) — Allah, the Exalted, says: Truly, in what We did to the people of Nūḥ, O Muḥammad, by destroying them when they denied Our messengers, rejected the acknowledgment of Our Oneness, and worshipped the gods and idols — in that are lessons for your people, the polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh, and admonitions and proofs for Us, by which they may infer Our custom with their like, so that they may refrain from their disbelief (kufr) and hold back from denying you, out of fear that there may befall them the same as what befell them of punishment.
And His statement: وَإِنْ كُنَّا لَمُبْتَلِينَ (And indeed We were putting them to the test) — Allah, the Exalted, says: And We tested them by reminding them of Our signs, to see what they would do before Our punishment descended upon them.
