Allah, exalted is His mention, says to His prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Say, O Muhammad, to the polytheists of your people who dispute with you concerning Allah without knowledge, following every rebellious devil: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّمَا أَنَا لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُبِينٌ (O mankind, I am only a clear warner to you) — I warn you against the punishment of Allah lest it descend upon you in the worldly life, and against His torment in the Hereafter lest you undergo it. Mubīn — he said: I make my warning to you clear and bring it to light, so that you may turn away from your polytheism (shirk) and beware of that against which I warn you. Beyond that nothing is within my power. As for hastening the punishment and delaying it, for which you press me to hurry, that belongs to Allah — not to me, and I am not able to do it. Then He described his warning and his glad tidings, even though the glad tidings were not mentioned; but because the warning was mentioned in connection with a particular act, it is clear that the glad tidings are its opposite.
