Tabari

Tafseer of The Prophets · Al-Anbiyaa · 21:74

وَلُوطًا ءَاتَيْنَٰهُ حُكْمًۭا وَعِلْمًۭا وَنَجَّيْنَٰهُ مِنَ ٱلْقَرْيَةِ ٱلَّتِى كَانَت تَّعْمَلُ ٱلْخَبَٰٓئِثَ ۗ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمَ سَوْءٍۢ فَٰسِقِينَ

And to Lot We gave judgement and knowledge, and We saved him from the city that was committing wicked deeds. Indeed, they were a people of evil, defiantly disobedient.

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: We gave to Lūṭ judgment (ḥukm) — that is to say: the capacity to render decisions between adversaries — and knowledge (ʿilm): We also gave him knowledge concerning the matter of his religion and what was imposed upon him as obligations toward Allah.

There are two possibilities for the accusative form of Lūṭ: first, the connection via the conjunction to the verb, as we said — "We gave to Lūṭ" — and second, an implied verb with the meaning: "remember Lūṭ."

And His word وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْقَرْيَةِ الَّتِي كَانَتْ تَعْمَلُ الْخَبَائِثَ — He says: We saved him from Our punishment which We caused to descend upon the inhabitants of the city that committed abominations. That is the city of Sadūm, to which Lūṭ had been sent as a messenger. The abominations they committed were: carnal intercourse with men in their hindquarters, throwing small stones at people, breaking wind in their assemblies, and other reprehensible things that they did. Allah led him out, when He wished to destroy them, to the Levant.

As Mūsā related to me, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, who said: Allah led them out — that is to say Lūṭ and his two daughters Zaythā and Zaʿrathā — to the Levant, when He intended to destroy his people.

And His word إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمَ سَوْءٍ فَاسِقِينَ — disobedient to the command of Allah, having deviated from His obedience and from that which He approves as a deed.
