Allah, exalted be His praise, says: He knows what is before His angels — that is to say: what they have not yet attained of what shall be and of what they say and do — and what is behind them: that is to say: what has passed away in the former times and ages which they have left behind them and in which they acted. All of this is recorded for them and against them; nothing of it is hidden from Allah.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes also spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the words يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ : "He says: He knows what they have sent forward and what they have neglected of their deeds."
وَلَا يَشْفَعُونَ إِلَّا لِمَنِ ارْتَضَى — "And they do not intercede except for whom He approves." He says: the angels intercede only for those with whom Allah is pleased.
