إِنَّهُۥ يَعْلَمُ ٱلْجَهْرَ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْلِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْتُمُونَ

Indeed, He knows what is declared of speech, and He knows what you conceal.

    Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says to His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Say to these polytheists (mushrikīn): Allah knows the loud speech that they utter aloud, and He knows what you keep hidden and do not say aloud — for Him the hidden and the manifest of it are alike, and the secret and the open; nothing of it is hidden from Him. But if He defers His punishment of you on account of what you keep hidden of ascribing partners to Him (shirk) or of what you do openly, then I do not know what the reason is for which He defers this from you. Perhaps His deferment of it — despite His promise to you — is on account of a trial (fitna) that He wills for you, and so that you may enjoy your life until an appointed term that He has set for you and which you will reach, after which His vengeance will descend upon you.

    In a manner similar to how we have explained this verse, the interpreters of the Qurʾān have spoken.

    يقول تعالى ذكره لنبيه محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم: قل لهؤلاء المشركين ، إن الله يعلم الجهر الذي يجهرون به من القول ، ويعلم ما تخفونه فلا تجهرون به ، سواء عنده خفيه وظاهره وسره وعلانيته ، إنه لا يخفى عليه منه شيء ، فإن أخر عنكم عقابه على ما تخفون من الشرك به أو تجهرون به ، فما أدري ما السبب الذي من أجله يؤخر ذلك عنكم؟ لعلّ تأخيره ذلك عنكم مع وعده إياكم لفتنة يريدها بكم ، ولتتمتعوا بحياتكم إلى أجل قد جعله لكم تبلغونه ، ثم ينـزل بكم حينئذ نقمته. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل.
