The scholars of exegesis differed concerning the meaning of this. Some said: the meaning is that We have sent down to you a Book in which is your remembrance, that is to say: your tidings.

Mention of those who said this:

It was related to me by Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr, who said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, who said: ʿĪsā related to us; and it was related to me by al-Ḥārith, who said: al-Ḥasan related to us, who said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ: he said: "Your tidings."

We were related to by al-Qāsim, who said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, who said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning لَقَدْ أَنـزلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ كِتَابًا فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ: he said: "Your tidings." أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ: he said: "This is in Sūrat Qad Aflaḥa: بَلْ أَتَيْنَاهُمْ بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِهِمْ مُعْرِضُونَ."

We were related to by al-Qāsim, who said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, who said: Sufyān related to us: "The Qurʾān has come down with noble character traits; have you not heard that He says: لَقَدْ أَنـزلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ كِتَابًا فِيهِ ذِكْرُكُمْ أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ?"

Others said: rather, by al-dhikr in this place is meant: the honorable mention (al-sharaf); and they said that the meaning of the text is: "We have sent down to you a Book in which is your honorable mention."

Abū Jaʿfar said: The second opinion is the most fitting for the meaning of the word — and it is the same as what Sufyān said, as we have cited it from him; and that is because it is an honorable mention for whoever follows it and acts according to what is in it.
