Tabari (1 passage)

And His words كُلُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا رَزَقْنَاكُمْ — Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says to them: Eat, O Children of Israel, of the good things of the provision that We have given you, and of that which is lawful thereof which We have made good for you. وَلا تَطْغَوْا فِيهِ — that is to say: and do not transgress the bounds therein, and let not some of you wrong others therein. As ʿAlī related to us, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words وَلا تَطْغَوْا فِيهِ : he says: and do not be unjust.

And His words فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبِي — that is to say: then My punishment descends upon you.

As Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبِي : he says: then My wrath descends upon you.

The Qurʾān-reciters differed over the reading of this. The overwhelming majority of the Qurʾān-reciters of the Ḥijāz, Medina, Basra and Kufa read: فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ — with kasra under the ḥāʾ — and وَمَنْ يَحْلِلْ — with kasra under the lām — directing the meaning toward: then My wrath has become obligatory upon you. A group of the Qurʾān-reciters of Kufa read: فَيَحُلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ — with ḍamma under the ḥāʾ — directing the exegesis toward what we have mentioned from Qatāda, namely that it falls and descends upon you, My wrath.

Abū Jaʿfar says: The most correct view concerning this, in my opinion, is that these are two well-known readings, each of which has been read by scholars among the Qurʾān-reciters. Allah warned the Children of Israel to whom this word was addressed against the falling of His punishment upon them and its descending upon them through their disobedience if they disobeyed Him, and made them fear its becoming obligatory against them. Whether one reads this as "descending" or as "becoming obligatory" — it is the same, for they were warned against both meanings.

    [81]

The exposition of the exegesis of the word of Allah the Exalted:

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: And whoever upon him My wrath becomes obligatory and descends upon him, he has fallen — that is to say: he has come to ruin and has become wretched. As ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words فَقَدْ هَوَى : he says: he has become wretched.
