Concerning His word وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي ("and loosen a knot from my tongue"): Allah says: Untie my tongue in speaking. There was in his tongue—according to what has been mentioned—a speech impediment as a result of placing the burning coal in his mouth on the day that Pharaoh had wanted to kill him.

Mention of the narration about this from those who said that: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr—concerning His word: عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي: he said: "A speech impediment from a burning coal that he put in his mouth at the command of Pharaoh's wife, in order thereby to avert a punishment from Pharaoh, when Mūsā seized him by his beard while he (Mūsā) was not capable of understanding. Pharaoh said: 'This is my enemy.' She said to him: 'He does not understand.'

Al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ—concerning وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي: "from a burning coal that he put in his mouth at the command of Pharaoh's wife, in order thereby to avert a punishment of Pharaoh from him, when Mūsā seized him by his beard while he was not capable of understanding. Pharaoh said: 'This is my enemy.' She said to him: 'He does not understand.' This is the statement of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr."

Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid—concerning His word وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي: he said: "A speech impediment from the burning coal that he put in his mouth, at the command of Pharaoh's wife, in order thereby to avert a punishment of Pharaoh from him, when he seized him by his beard."

Mūsā related to us, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: "When the boy began to move—that is, Mūsā—his mother Āsiya brought him as a child, and while she was rocking him and playing with him, she gave him to Pharaoh, and said: 'Take him.' When he took him to himself, Mūsā seized his beard and pulled it, whereupon Pharaoh said: 'Let me fetch the slaughterers.' Āsiya said: لَا تَقْتُلُوهُ عَسَى أَنْ يَنْفَعَنَا أَوْ نَتَّخِذَهُ وَلَدًا ('Do not kill him; perhaps he will benefit us, or we will take him as a child')—he is only a child who does not understand, and he did this only out of his childishness. I know that there is no one in Egypt who has more beautiful jewels than I: I will set before him jewels of rubies and set before him burning coals; if he takes the rubies, then he understands—so kill him then; but if he takes the coals, then he is a child.' She brought out her rubies and placed before him a dish with burning coals. Then Jibrāʾīl, peace be upon him, came and threw a burning coal into his hand, and Mūsā threw it into his mouth, whereby his tongue was burned. This is what Allah, the Almighty, the Exalted, says: وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي ✦ يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي ('and loosen a knot from my tongue, that they may understand my words'), and the knot departed from Mūsā thereby."
