And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

The explanation of the meaning of His statement, exalted is He: فَإِنِ انْتَهَوْا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (But if they cease, then Allah is indeed Forgiving, Merciful.) (192)
Abū Jaʿfar said: He, exalted is His mention, means by it: If the unbelievers whom you fight cease from fighting you and from their unbelief in Allah, and they desist from that and repent, "then Allah is indeed Forgiving" with regard to the sins of whoever among them believes and repents from his polytheism, and returns to Allah from his acts of disobedience which he previously committed and his days which have passed — "Merciful" toward him in his Hereafter through His favor to him, and by granting him what He grants to the people of obedience of reward, on account of his return to what He loves from his disobedience. As:
3112 - Al-Muthanná related to us, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid: "If they cease" — that is: if they repent — "then Allah is indeed Forgiving, Merciful."
