Tafseer of Mary · Maryam · 19:97
So, [O Muhammad], We have only made Qur'an easy in the Arabic language that you may give good tidings thereby to the righteous and warn thereby a hostile people.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
His words فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَاهُ بِلِسَانِكَ لِتُبَشِّرَ بِهِ الْمُتَّقِينَ (We have only made it easy in your tongue, so that you may give therewith glad tidings to the God-fearing): He — exalted be His praise — says: We have made this Qurʾān, O Muḥammad, easy in your tongue, so that you may recite it, in order that you may give therewith glad tidings of Paradise (janna) to the God-fearing — those who fear the punishment of Allah by fulfilling His obligations and avoiding His prohibitions. وَتُنْذِرَ بِهِ قَوْمًا لُدًّا (and that you may warn therewith an obstinate people): He says: and that you may warn therewith your people of the Quraysh against the punishment of Allah, for they are a people of stubborn dispute and contention by falsehood — they do not accept the truth. Al-ludd (لُدًّا) is the vehemence of verbal contention.
In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes also spoke.
* Mention of who said this:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word (لُدًّا): he said: they do not go straight.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid: the same.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the words وتنذر به قوما لدا : he said: that you may warn therewith an unjust people.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, وَتُنْذِرَ بِهِ قَوْمًا لُدًّا : that is to say: people who contend by falsehood, who stubbornly struggle and dispute.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl related to us, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words وَتُنْذِرَ بِهِ قَوْمًا لُدًّا : he said: sinners.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning the words وَتُنْذِرَ بِهِ قَوْمًا لُدًّا : he said: al-aladd (الألدّ) is the unjust one. And he recited the word of Allah وَهُوَ أَلَدُّ الْخِصَامِ (and he is the most vehement of disputants).
Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Ḍirārī related to us, saying: al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār related to us, saying: Mahdī Maymūn related to us, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning the word of Allah the Mighty and Majestic وَتُنْذِرَ بِهِ قَوْمًا لُدًّا : he said: deaf to the truth.
Ibn Sinān related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, on the authority of Hārūn, on the authority of al-Ḥasan: the same.
We have already expounded the meaning of al-aladd elsewhere, with the proofs required for that, so that repeating it in this place is superfluous.
