"إِنْ كُلُّ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِلَّا آتِي الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدًا" ("There is none in the heavens and the earth but he shall come to the Most Merciful as a slave") — that is to say: all who are in the heavens — the angels — and on the earth — humankind and the jinn — إِلَّا آتِي الرَّحْمَنِ عَبْدًا — that is to say: they shall all come on the Day of Resurrection to their Lord as a slave (ʿabdan) of His, humble and submissive, acknowledging their state of slavery to Him, without any bond of kinship between them and Him.
His word: آتِي الرَّحْمَنِ ("who comes to the Most Merciful") is an ism fāʿil (active participle) derived from: "I came to him (ataytuhu), and I come to him (fa-anā ātihi)."
