Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says to His Prophet ﷺ: Remember, O Muhammad, in Our Book which We have sent down to you, Mūsā ibn ʿImrān, and tell your people that he was sincere (makhlaṣan).

The Qurʾān reciters differed over its reading. Most of the reciters of Medina and Baṣra, and some of the Kūfan reciters, read it as مُخْلِصًا — with a kasra under the lām of al-mukhliṣ — in the meaning that he devoted worship exclusively to Allah and ascribed divinity to Him alone without assigning Him any partner therein. Most of the reciters of the people of Kūfa — with the exception of ʿĀṣim — read it as مُخْلَصًا — with a fatḥa upon the lām of mukhlaṣ — in the meaning that Allah had chosen Mūsā and selected him for His messengership, and had charged him as a sent prophet.

Abū Jaʿfar said: The correct view concerning this, in my estimation, is: he ﷺ was makhliṣan in the worship of Allah, and makhlaṣan for the messengership and the prophethood. So whichever of the two readings any of the reciters reads, he attains what is correct.

وَكَانَ رَسُولا (and he was a messenger): he says: and he was from Allah a messenger to his people, the Children of Israel, and to those to whom he had been sent as a prophet.
