[Abraham] said, "Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: Ibrāhīm said to his father, when the latter repaid him for his counsel and his call to Allah with foul words and chastisement: Peace be upon you, O my father — he says: a promise from me to you that I will not return to that which you oppose, and will not go back to calling you to that for which you have threatened me with punishment. But: سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ لَكَ رَبِّي (I shall ask my Lord to forgive you): he says: but I will ask my Lord to cover over your sins by pardoning you on His part from the punishment for them. إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِي حَفِيًّا (Verily, He has ever been gracious to me): he says: my Lord has shown Himself compassionate toward me — He answers my supplication when I call upon Him. One says: taḥaffā bī fulān (so-and-so showed me kindness). We have already expounded this with attestations in what preceded, in a manner that makes its repetition here unnecessary.
Nearly the same as what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) said.
Mention of who said that:
ʿAlī related to me, he said: ʿAbd Allāh related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, his word إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِي حَفِيًّا: he says: compassionate.
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word إِنَّهُ كَانَ بِي حَفِيًّا: he said: verily, He has been compassionate to me, for al-ḥafiyy is the compassionate one.
