Tafseer of Mary · Maryam · 19:38
How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
Allah, exalted be His praise, informs about the state of those who disbelieve in Him, who ascribe equals to Him and claim that He has a child, on the Day when they will appear before Him in the Hereafter: Although in this world they were blind to beholding the Truth and to perceiving the proofs of Allah that indicate His Oneness, deaf to hearing the verses of His Book and that to which the messengers of Allah called them therein for acknowledgment — namely, the acknowledgment of His Oneness and of that with which He sent His prophets — how well will they then hear and see on the Day when they appear before their Lord in the Hereafter, when that seeing and hearing will no longer avail them.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the scholars of tafsīr also spoke.
Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ (How well will they hear and see): "That is, by Allah, on the Day of Resurrection. They heard while hearing did not avail them, and they saw while seeing did not avail them."
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ : he said: "How sharp of hearing they are and how sharp-sighted."
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Abū Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, who said concerning أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ يَوْمَ يَأْتُونَنَا : "On the Day of Resurrection."
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya, who said: أَسْمِعْ (Hear) their tidings of today, وَأَبْصِرْ (and see) how they will be dealt with يَوْمَ يَأْتُونَنَا (on the Day when they come to Us).
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word أَسْمِعْ بِهِمْ وَأَبْصِرْ يَوْمَ يَأْتُونَنَا : "This is on the Day of Resurrection. But in this world there was a veil over their eyes and a heaviness in their ears. Yet when the Day of Resurrection came, they saw and heard, but it does not avail them." And he recited: رَبَّنَا أَبْصَرْنَا وَسَمِعْنَا فَارْجِعْنَا نَعْمَلْ صَالِحًا إِنَّا مُوقِنُونَ (Our Lord, we have seen and heard; so return us that we may do righteous deeds. Indeed, we are now certain.)
His word لَكِنِ الظَّالِمُونَ الْيَوْمَ فِي ضَلالٍ مُبِينٍ (But the wrongdoers today are in manifest error) — Allah, exalted be His praise, says: But the disbelievers who ascribed to Him what does not belong to His attributes, and who invented lies about Him, are today in this world in a manifest error, that is: upon a path that deviates from the way of the Truth and that does not run straight — a manifest error, which to whoever considers it and reflects upon it is recognizable as a deviation from the path of right guidance and the good way, for whoever has been guided by Allah.
