Allah the Exalted says: Maryam feared our messenger when he appeared to her in the form of a well-built human, and she thought that he was a man who wanted something from her concerning her person.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, concerning His word (إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا): he said: "she feared that he wanted only her person."
Mūsā related to us, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: فَتَمَثَّلَ لَهَا بَشَرًا سَوِيًّا — "when she saw him, she was startled by him and said: (إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا) — she said: 'I seek, O man, refuge with the Most Merciful against you' — she said: I seek protection with the Most Merciful against you, so that you do not do to me what He has forbidden you, if you fear Him in His prohibitions and avoid disobedience to Him — for whoever fears Allah avoids that. And if it were understood to mean that she intended: I seek refuge with the Most Merciful against you if you fear Allah regarding my seeking protection with Him and my taking refuge in Him — then that too would be a possible interpretation."
Just as Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of someone whom he did not suspect, on the authority of Wahb ibn Munabbih: (قَالَتْ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا) — "and she thought nothing other than that he was a man from the sons of Adam."
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Abū Bakr related to us, on the authority of ʿĀṣim: he said: Ibn Zayd said — and he mentioned the story of Maryam — and he said: "she knew that the God-fearing one is of good judgment, when she said: (إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِالرَّحْمَنِ مِنْكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ تَقِيًّا قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَنَا رَسُولُ رَبِّكِ)." Allah the Exalted says: our spirit said to her: "I am only the messenger of your Lord, O Maryam, who has sent me to you" (لأهَبَ لَكِ غُلامًا زَكِيًّا) — "that I may grant you a pure boy."
