And indeed, We will make that which is upon it [into] a barren ground.

The explanation of the words of Allah: وَإِنَّا لَجَاعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا (18:8)
Allah, exalted be His mention, says: We shall, after its cultivation, lay it waste by destroying everything We have placed upon it as adornment, and make it a bare, dry surface upon which there remains no vegetation, no crops, and no planting. It has also been said that by "ṣaʿīd" in this place a level, open expanse is meant, and that is close to our own explanation.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, and concerning the meaning of "al-juruz," the exegetes spoke.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me; he said: my father related to me; he said: my uncle related to me; he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning وَإِنَّا لَجَاعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا . He said: "Everything upon it perishes and passes away."
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me; he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us; he said: ʿĪsā related to us. And al-Ḥārith related to me; he said: al-Ḥasan related to us; he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا . He said: "A bare, deserted tract (balqaʿ)."
Al-Qāsim related to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us; he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — the same.
Bishr related to us; he said: Yazīd related to us; he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning وَإِنَّا لَجَاعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا : "Al-ṣaʿīd — earth upon which stands neither tree nor vegetation."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us; he said: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, concerning وَإِنَّا لَجَاعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيْهَا صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا : "that is to say: the earth — everything upon it shall perish and vanish, and the return is to Me; so do not grieve, and let not what you hear and see upon it sadden you."
Yūnus related to me; he said: Ibn Wahb informed us; he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning صَعِيدًا جُرُزًا : "Al-juruz — earth upon which there is nothing. Do you not see that Allah says: أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا نَسُوقُ الْمَاءَ إِلَى الأَرْضِ الْجُرُزِ فَنُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا (Have they not seen that We drive the water to the barren earth and bring forth thereby crops)? Al-juruz — nothing upon it, neither crops nor benefit. Al-ṣaʿīd — the level. And he recited: لا تَرَى فِيهَا عِوَجًا وَلا أَمْتًا (you see therein neither crookedness nor hillock) — level." He said: "One says: 'jurizat al-arḍ fa-hiya majrūza' — the earth has been stripped bare; locusts and livestock have eaten it bare; 'araḍūn ajrāz' when nothing stands upon it. A year of drought is also called 'juruz,' and a succession of drought years 'sinin ajrāz' because of its drought and desiccation, as the poet said:
قَدْ جَرَفَتْهُنَّ السُّنُونَ الأجْرَازْ (The barren years have swept them away)
One says: 'ajraza al-qawm' when their land has become juruz (bare, dry ground), and 'jarazū arḍahum' when they have eaten up all its vegetation."
