1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   The explanation of the meaning of His word: إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا — Allah the Exalted says: We have made all that is upon the earth an adornment for the earth — لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا — that is to say: so that We may put Our servants to the test: which of them shows the greatest detachment from it, most follows Our commands and prohibitions, and most acts in obedience to Us therein.

   In accordance with what we have said concerning this verse, the exegetes have also spoken.

   Account of those who said this: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to us, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us — and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najiḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, who said concerning مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا: "All that is upon it."

   Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — to the same effect.

   Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا: "It has been related to us that the Prophet of Allah ﷺ used to say: 'Verily, the world is green and sweet, and Allah makes you successors therein and watches how you act — so fear the world, and fear women.'"

   As for His word لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا: the exegetes have explained this in accordance with our explanation of it.

   Account of those who said this: Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim al-ʿAsqalānī related to us, who said concerning لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا: "The greatest detachment from it."

   Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, concerning إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا: "As a trial for them: who most follows my command and most acts in obedience to Me."

   القول في تأويل قوله : (إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا) يقول عز ذكره: إنا جعلنا ما على الأرض زينة للأرض (لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا) يقول: لنختبر عبادنا أيهم أترك لها وأتبع لأمرنا ونهينا وأعمل فيها بطاعتنا. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك، قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى " ح " ، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد (مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا) قال: ما عليها من شيء. حدثنا القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثني حجاج، عن ابن جريج، عن مجاهد، مثله. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله: (إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا) ذكر لنا أن نبيّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقول : " إنَّ الدُّنْيا خَضِرَةٌ حُلْوَةٌ، وَإنَّ اللهَ مُسْتَخْلِفَكُمْ فِيها، فَناظِرٌ كَيْفَ تَعْمَلُونَ، فاتَّقُوا الدُّنْيا، واتَّقُوا النِّساء ". وأما قوله: (لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا) فإن أهل التأويل قالوا في تأويله نحو قولنا فيه. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم العسقلاني، قال: (لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا) قال: أترك لها. حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا سلمة، عن ابن إسحاق (إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى الأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلا) اختبارا لهم أيهم أتبع لأمري وأعمل بطاعتي.
