His words, Mighty and Great: And We send down of the Qurʾān that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers — Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: And We send down to you, O Muḥammad, of the Qurʾān that which is a healing, by which healing is sought from ignorance and error, and by which one comes to see out of blindness — for the believers, and a mercy for them, not for the disbelievers therein. For the believers act according to the obligations of Allah that are in it, treating what it makes lawful as lawful and what it makes forbidden as forbidden, whereby He causes them thereby to enter the Garden (janna) and saves them from His punishment; thus it is for them a mercy and a favor from Allah, which He has bestowed upon them. And for the wrongdoers it only increases loss — that is to say: this which We send down to you of the Qurʾān only increases the disbelievers therein in loss — that is to say: in ruin — for whenever there descends in it a command of Allah to do something or to refrain from something, they denied it; they did not carry out His command and did not desist from what He forbade them, so that this brought them an additional loss on top of the loss they already had before, and a corruption on top of their former corruption.
As Bishr related to us, who said: Yazīd related to us, who said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words wa-nunzilu min al-Qurʾāni mā huwa shifāʾun wa-raḥmatun li-l-muʾminīna: When a believer hears it, he reaps benefit from it, retains it, and preserves it and for the wrongdoers it only increases therein loss — for he reaps no benefit from it, does not retain it, and does not preserve it. For Allah has made this Qurʾān a healing and a mercy for the believers.
