Tafseer of The Night Journey · Al-Israa · 17:75
Then [if you had], We would have made you taste double [punishment in] life and double [after] death. Then you would not find for yourself against Us a helper.

Allah, exalted be His mention, says: Had you, O Muhammad, inclined even a little toward these polytheists (mushrikīn) in what they asked of you, We would surely have made you taste a double punishment in life and a double punishment in death.
And in the same manner as we have explained this, the exegetes of the Qurʾān spoke.
Mention of who said that:
Muhammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the word of Allah إِذًا لَّأَذَقْنَاكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَيَاةِ وَضِعْفَ الْمَمَاتِ (Then We would surely have made you taste double in life and double in death): that is, double the punishment in life and double the punishment after death.
Muhammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His word إِذًا لَّأَذَقْنَاكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَيَاةِ وَضِعْفَ الْمَمَاتِ: that is, double the punishment in life and double the punishment after death.
ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُ لَكَ عَلَيْنَا نَصِيرًا (Then you would not find for yourself against Us any helper): that is, there would be no one to help you who would avert Our punishment from you or who would defend you against it.
