Allah, exalted be His mention, says: Then We gave you, O Children of Israel, the victory over this people whom He, glorious be His praise, described as that which He would send forth against them. That victory and return over them was, as al-Suddī mentions in his narration, that the Children of Israel attacked them, struck them, and reconquered what they had taken into their possession. According to another view, it meant that the king who had attacked them released the captives he had taken and returned the goods he had seized to them, without battle. And according to the view of Ibn ʿAbbās, which is related from him by ʿAṭiyya, it was the victory that Allah gave them over their enemy Jālūt, until they killed him. All of this we have already mentioned, with its chains of transmission (isnāds), in what preceded.
وَأَمْدَدْنَاكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ (And We reinforced you with wealth and sons) He says: and We increased what We had already given you of wealth and sons.
And His word وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ أَكْثَرَ نَفِيرًا (and We made you greater in number of fighting men) He says: and We made your number of those who go forth greater than theirs. And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.
— Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ أَكْثَرَ نَفِيرًا : that is, in number; and that was in the time of Dāwūd.
Mūsā related to me, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ أَكْثَرَ نَفِيرًا : he says: in number.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَا لَكُمُ الْكَرَّةَ عَلَيْهِمْ — to the Children of Israel — after the defeat had taken place and the others of them had withdrawn: وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ أَكْثَرَ نَفِيرًا ; he said: We made you thereafter greater in number.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَا لَكُمُ الْكَرَّةَ عَلَيْهِمْ : thereafter the victory returned to the Children of Israel.
Muḥammad ibn Sinān al-Qazzāz related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning His word وَأَمْدَدْنَاكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ : he said: four thousand.
