And when you recite the Qur'an, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition.

Allah the Exalted says: And when you, O Muḥammad, recite the Qurʾān to these polytheists who do not affirm the Resurrection and do not acknowledge the reward and the punishment, We place between you and them a veil (ḥijāb) that prevents their hearts from understanding what you recite to them, so that they cannot benefit from it — as a punishment from Us against them for their disbelief. And the ḥijāb here is: that which covers.
As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ جَعَلْنَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ حِجَابًا مَسْتُورًا: "The covered veil are the coverings that lie over their hearts, so that they do not understand it and derive no benefit from it — they obeyed Satan, and so he gained the upper hand over them."
Muḥammad related to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning حِجَابًا مَسْتُورًا: he said: "Those are the coverings (al-akinna)."
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word وَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ الْقُرْآنَ جَعَلْنَا بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ حِجَابًا مَسْتُورًا: he said: "Ubayy said: They do not understand it." And he recited: قُلُوبُنَا فِي أَكِنَّةٍ مِمَّا تَدْعُونَا إِلَيْهِ وَفِي آذَانِنَا وَقْرٌ (Our hearts are covered against that to which you call us, and in our ears is deafness) — it does not reach them.
A grammarian of Basra held the view that the meaning of His word حِجَابًا مَسْتُورًا is: a covering veil, but that it was expressed as a passive participle in the form of an active participle, just as one says: "You bring misfortune upon us" (mashʾūm) and "You bring fortune" (maymūn), whereas it is actually "shāʾim" and "yāmin," because it is from "he brings ill upon them" and "he brings good." And he said: the ḥijāb here is the veil, and he called it "mastūran." And others among the linguists said: the meaning of this is: a veil that is hidden from the servants, so that they do not see it.
This second view is the most evident with respect to the meaning of the word — that the concealed one is that which is hidden from the gazes of people so that their gazes do not reach it — even though there is an understandable angle for the first view.
