Tabari

Tafseer of The Bee · An-Nahl · 16:45

Then, do those who have planned evil deeds feel secure that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them or that the punishment will not come upon them from where they do not perceive?

Allah the Exalted says: Are those who wronged the believers among the Companions (ṣaḥāba) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sought to turn them away from their religion — the polytheists of Quraysh who, when it was said to them, "What has your Lord sent down?", answered, "Fables of the ancients" — [doing so] in order to bar from the straight path those who wished to believe in Allah — are they certain that Allah will not cause the earth to swallow them up on account of their unbelief (kufr) and their assigning of partners to Allah (shirk), or that the punishment of Allah will not come upon them from a place of which they are unaware and from which side they do not know it comes? Mujāhid held the view that by this verse Nimrod ibn Kanʿān (Namrūd ibn Kanʿān) was meant.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to us; he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us; he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me; he said: al-Ḥasan related to us; he said: Warqāʾ related to us; and al-Muthanná related to me; he said: Isḥāq related to us; he said: ʿAbdullāh related to us, on the authority of Warqāʾ — all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: أَفَأَمِنَ الَّذِينَ مَكَرُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ أَنْ يَخْسِفَ اللَّهُ بِهِمُ الأرْضَ ... up to His word أَوْ يَأْخُذَهُمْ عَلَى تَخَوُّفٍ — he said: "That is Namrūd ibn Kanʿān and his people."

Al-Qāsim related to us; he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us; he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — to the like of it.

We chose the interpretation we gave because this is a threat from Allah to the polytheists, and it comes immediately after His word To threaten those who did not accept the proof of Allah with which the discourse before it dealt is more fitting than to give an account of someone whose mention was concluded long ago.

Qatāda held the view concerning the meaning of "the evil deeds" (al-sayyiʾāt) in this place that which Bishr ibn Muʿādh related to us; he said: Yazīd related to us; he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word أَفَأَمِنَ الَّذِينَ مَكَرُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ: that is to say: "the assigning of partners to Allah (shirk)."
