Assuredly, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He does not like the arrogant.

Allah, exalted is His praise, means by His words: "Truly" (lā jarama) — that is to say: it is an established truth — that Allah knows what these polytheists (mushrikīn) bear in secret of rejection of the reports that We have mentioned in this sura, and their conviction of the falsehood of what We tell them, namely that your god is one god, and their arrogance toward Allah. He also knows what they openly display of disbelief in Allah and slanders against Him. إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ — He says: Allah does not love those who are arrogant and refuse to acknowledge Him as the One alone and to renounce the gods and equals beside Him.
Thus Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to us, saying: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn related to us, saying: Misʿar related to us, on the authority of a man: that al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī used to sit with the destitute (al-masākīn), whereupon he said: إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْتَكْبِرِينَ .
