That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.

Allah, the Exalted, says: The wrath of Allah has descended upon these mushrikīn, and the tremendous punishment has become obligatory for them, because they chose the adornment of the worldly life over the bliss of the Hereafter, and because Allah does not grant the enabling grace (tawfīq) to a people who deny His signs (āyāt) and persist therein.
