Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: al-Thawrī informed us, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning His word فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ * عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ : he said: Concerning lā ilāha illā Allāh. Aḥmad related to us, on the authority of Sharīk, on the authority of Hilāl, on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUkayma: ʿAbd Allāh said: "By Him besides Whom there is no god — there is none of you but Allah will question him individually on the Day of Resurrection, just as one of you questions the one who stands alone in the light of the full moon, and then He says: Son of Adam, what made you underestimate Me? Son of Adam, what did you do with the knowledge that was given to you? Son of Adam, how did you answer the messengers?" Al-Qāsim related to us, on the authority of Ḥajjāj, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya — concerning فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ * عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ : he said: The servants will all be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about two matters: about what they worshipped, and about how they answered the messengers. Al-Muthannā related to us, on the authority of al-Ḥusayn al-Juʿfī, on the authority of Fuḍayl ibn Marzūq, on the authority of ʿAṭiyya al-ʿAwfī, on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar — concerning لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ * عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ : he said: Concerning lā ilāha illā Allāh. Al-Muthannā related to me, on the authority of Muʿāwiya, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās — concerning His word فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْأَلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ * عَمَّا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ . Then he said: فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْ ذَنْبِهِ إِنْسٌ وَلَا جَانٌّ — he said: He will not ask them: Did you do this or that? — for He knows that better than they do; rather He will say to them: Why did you do this or that?
