Tafseer of The Rock · Al-Hijr · 15:9
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
Allah the Exalted says: إِنَّا نَحْنُ نـزلْنَا الذِّكْرَ — and this is the Qurʾān — وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ — He says: and We guard the Qurʾān so that no falsehood is added to it that does not belong in it, and no part of it is taken away that does belong in it — of its legal rulings, its prescribed punishments (ḥudūd), and its obligations. The pronoun "hu" in His word لَهُ refers to "al-ḏikr" (the reminder/the Qurʾān).
In accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of tafsīr spoke.
Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and Al-Ḥāriṯ related to me, saying: Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us; and Al-Ḥasan related to me, saying: Šabāba related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us; and Al-Muṯannā related to me, saying: Abū Ḥuḏayfa related to us, saying: Šibl related to us — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ — he said: with Us.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid — in accordance therewith.
Bišr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word إِنَّا نَحْنُ نـزلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ — he said in another verse: لا يَأْتِيهِ الْبَاطِلُ — and the falsehood is Iblīs — مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ — Allah sent it down and then preserved it, so that Iblīs cannot add any falsehood to it nor remove any truth from it; Allah preserves it against that.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Ṯawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda [concerning] وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ — he said: Allah has preserved it so that the devil adds no falsehood to it nor removes any truth from it. And it has been said: the pronoun "hu" in His word وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ refers to Muḥammad ﷺ — with the meaning: and We guard Muḥammad against whoever among his enemies wishes to strike him with evil.
