Concerning His word وَجَاءَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ (And the inhabitants of the city came rejoicing): by this He says: The inhabitants of the city of Sadūm — and that is the people of Lūṭ — when they heard that guests had alighted with Lūṭ, came rejoicing at their arrival in their city, out of desire to commit the abomination with them.
As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَجَاءَ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ (And the inhabitants of the city came rejoicing): they rejoiced at the guests of the prophet of Allah ﷺ Lūṭ, when they alighted with him, on account of the shameful deed they wished to do to them.
