He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

And he said to them: إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُنْكَرُونَ — that is to say: we do not know you, we do not recognize you. The messengers answered him: "On the contrary, we are the messengers of Allah. We have come to you with that concerning which your people were in doubt as to whether it would descend upon them of the punishment of Allah on account of their disbelief (kufr) toward Him."
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us. And al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us. And al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to me, saying: Shubāba related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us. And al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us. And al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: ʿAbdullāh related to us, on the authority of Warqāʾ — all of them on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُنْكَرُونَ — he said: "Lūṭ did not recognize them."
