He says: when I have then shaped him and set his form aright وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِنْ رُوحِي — and he became a living man فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ — a prostration of honoring and reverence, not a prostration of worship.
Jaʿfar ibn Mukram related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: Shuʿayb ibn Bishr related to us, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: when Allah created the angels, He said: I am going to create a man out of clay; when I have created him, then prostrate yourselves before him. They said: we will not do that. Then He sent a fire upon them and burned them. Then He created other angels, and said: I am going to create a man out of clay; when I have created him, then prostrate yourselves before him. But they refused. He said: then He sent a fire upon them and burned them. After that He created still other angels, and said: I am going to create a man out of clay; when I have created him, then prostrate yourselves before him. But they refused; then He sent a fire upon them and burned them. Then He created angels and said: I am going to create a man out of clay; when I have created him, then prostrate yourselves before him. They said: we hear and we obey. Except Iblīs — he was among the first of the unbelievers.
