Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: and Mūsā said to his people: if you are ungrateful, O people, and deny the favour of Allah which He bestowed upon you — though you do that, and all those upon the earth do likewise — فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ (then indeed Allah is free of need) of you and of them, of all His creatures — He has no need of your gratitude towards Him for His favours, from any of you. حَمِيدٌ (and praiseworthy): acclaimed by His creatures for the favours He has bestowed upon them.
Thus al-Muthanná related to me, saying: Isḥāq related to us, saying: ʿAbdullāh ibn Hāshim related to us, saying: Sayf informed us, on the authority of Abū Rawq, on the authority of Abū Ayyūb, on the authority of ʿAlī, concerning فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ : he said: "Free of need of His creatures." حَمِيدٌ : he said: "Mustaḥmad — acclaimed — towards them."
