Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Aṣbagh ibn al-Faraj related to us, saying: Ibn Wahb informed me, saying: ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith related to us that Bakr ibn Sawāda told him, on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jubayr, on the authority of ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the word of Ibrāhīm rabbi innahunna aḍlalna kathīran min al-nāsi fa-man tabiʿanī fa-innahū minnī wa-man ʿaṣānī fa-innaka ghafūrun raḥīmun and the word of ʿĪsā in tuʿadhdhibhum fa-innahum ʿibāduka wa-in taghfir lahum fa-innaka anta al-ʿAzīzu al-Ḥakīmu . Then he raised his hands and said: "O Allah, my community (umma), O Allah, my community!" and he wept. Allah the Exalted said: "O Jibrīl, go to Muḥammad — and your Lord knows best — and ask him why he weeps." Jibrāʾīl went to him and asked him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him what he had said. Allah then said: "O Jibrāʾīl, go to Muḥammad and say to him: We shall satisfy you concerning your community, and We shall not grieve you."
