Tabari

Tafseer of Abraham · Ibrahim · 14:34

And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.

Allah the Exalted says: And if you, O people, wished to count the favour of Allah which He has bestowed upon you, you would not be able to keep track of its number, nor would you be able to fulfil thankfulness for it except with Allah's help to you in that. Inna al-insāna la-ẓalūmun kaffār — He says: the human being who exchanged the favour of Allah for unbelief (kufr) is a great committer of injustice — that is to say: he gives thanks to other than the One who bestowed favour upon him, and is thereby, in his deed, placing thankfulness in the wrong place. For Allah is the One who bestowed favour upon him with what He gave him, and who has the right to His worship exclusively, yet he worshipped another and set up for Him equals (andādan) to lead astray from His path — and that is his commission of injustice. His statement kaffār — He says: he is the denier of the favour of Allah which He bestowed upon him, in that he directed worship to other than the One who bestowed favour upon him, and abandoned obedience toward the One who bestowed favour upon him.

Al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad related to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Hārūn related to us, saying: Misʿar related to us, on the authority of Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm, on the authority of Ṭalq ibn Ḥabīb, who said: "The duty owed to Allah is too heavy for the servants to be able to fulfil it, and the favours of Allah are too many for the servants to be able to count them; but begin your day as those who repent and end your day as those who repent."
