Tafseer of Abraham · Ibrahim · 14:32

It is Allah who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.

Allah the Exalted says: Allāhu alladhī khalaqa al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍ and performed the deeds He described — wa-sakhkhara lakumu al-shamsa wa-al-qamara — they alternate above you, O people, in night and day, for the welfare of your souls and your livelihood — dāʾibayni — in their alternation above you. And it has been said: the meaning is that they are continually engaged in obedience to Allah.

Khalaf ibn Wāṣil related to us, on the authority of a man, on the authority of Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word wa-sakhkhara lakumu al-shamsa wa-al-qamara dāʾibayni : he said: "Their being continually engaged is in obedience to Allah."

His word wa-sakhkhara lakumu al-layla wa-al-nahār — they alternate above you, this one departs and that one comes, with your benefits and the welfare of your needs — this one is for you so that you may move about in it for your livelihood, and that one is for you to find rest in it, as a mercy from Him to you.
