And those who believed and did righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein by permission of their Lord; and their greeting therein will be, "Peace!"

Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, mighty and exalted is His remembrance, says: and He guided those who believed in Allah and His Messenger — those who professed the oneness of Allah and acknowledged the mission of His messengers, and were convinced that what they had brought from Allah was the truth — and وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ (and performed good works): that is to say: those who acted in obedience to Allah, following the commands of Allah and avoiding His prohibitions — جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ (gardens beneath which rivers flow): pleasure-gardens beneath which rivers flow; خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا: that is to say: abiding therein forever; (23) بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ: that is to say: they have been led into it by the command of Allah to them to enter; تَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهَا سَلَامٌ (their greeting therein is: peace). (24) And this is — if Allah wills — as in:
20657 — Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, who said, concerning His words: تَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهَا سَلَامٌ: he said: the angels greet them in the Garden (janna).
And as for His words: أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ ضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً كَشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ (have you not seen how Allah sets forth a parable: a good word like a good tree?) — Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says to His prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: have you not seen, O Muḥammad, with the eye of your heart, (25) and do you thus know how Allah set forth a parable and made a comparison? (26) كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً: by the good He means faith (īmān) in Him, glorified be His praise, (27) as a tree with good fruit — the mention of "the fruit" has been omitted because the hearers have sufficient understanding of the matter through the mention of "the tree." His words: أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ — Allah, mighty and exalted, says: the root of this tree stands firm in the earth, and its فَرْعُهَا — its crown — فِي السَّمَاءِ: reaches upward toward the sky. And His words: تُؤْتِي أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهَا: it gives its edible fruits in every season by the command of its Lord. (28) وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ: Allah sets forth parables for the people and makes comparisons for them. (29) لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ: so that they may call to mind the proof of Allah against them and take instruction from it and accept admonition, so that they turn away from disbelief (kufr) in Him and turn toward faith (īmān). (30)
The exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning the meaning of "the good word."
Some said: by it is meant the faith (īmān) of the believer.
