Tafseer of The Thunder · Ar-Ra'd · 13:40

وَإِن مَّا نُرِيَنَّكَ بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى نَعِدُهُمْ أَوْ نَتَوَفَّيَنَّكَ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْبَلَٰغُ وَعَلَيْنَا ٱلْحِسَابُ

And whether We show you part of what We promise them or take you in death, upon you is only the [duty of] notification, and upon Us is the account.

    Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Whether We show you, O Muḥammad, during your lifetime a portion of what We promise these polytheists (mushrikīn) of punishment for their disbelief, or We cause you to die before We show you that — then your task is only to do what your Lord requires of you: to convey His message to them, and not to seek their reform or their ruin. And it is Our task to bring them to account and to requite them according to their deeds — if it is good, then good, and if it is evil, then evil.

    قال أبو جعفر: يقول تعالى ذكره لنبيه محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم: وإما نرينك، يا محمد في حياتك بعضَ الذي نعدُ هؤلاء المشركين بالله من العقاب على كفرهم أو نتوفيَنَّكَ قبل أن نُريَك ذلك, فإنما عليك أن تنتهِيَ إلى طاعة ربك فيما أمرك به من تبليغهم رسالتَه, لا طلبَ صلاحِهم ولا فسادهِم, وعلينا محاسبتهم، فمجازاتهم بأعمالهم, إن خيرًا فخيرٌ وإن شرًّا فشرٌّ .
