قَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَبَانَا ٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا خَٰطِـِٔينَ

They said, "O our father, ask for us forgiveness of our sins; indeed, we have been sinners."

    The discourse on the explanation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: قَالُوا يَا أَبَانَا اسْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا خَاطِئِينَ (They said: O our father, ask forgiveness for us for our sins; truly we were sinners) (97)

    Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: The sons of Yaʿqūb, who had brought about a separation between him and Yūsuf, said: O our father, ask your Lord on our behalf to forgive and to cover over the sins which we have committed against you and against Yūsuf, and not to punish us for them on the Day of Resurrection. (Truly we were sinners) in what we did to him; we acknowledge our sins.

    القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : قَالُوا يَا أَبَانَا اسْتَغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا خَاطِئِينَ (97) قال أبو جعفر: يقول تعالى ذكره: قال ولد يعقوبَ الذين كانوا فرَّقوا بينه وبين يوسف: يا أبانا سل لنا ربك يعفُ عنَّا، ويستر علينا ذنوبنا التي أذنبناها فيك وفي يوسف، فلا يعاقبنا بها في القيامة ، (إِنَّا كُنَّا خَاطِئِينَ) ، فيما فعلنا به , فقد اعترفنا بذنوبنا .
