قَالُوا۟ وَأَقْبَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِم مَّاذَا تَفْقِدُونَ

They said while approaching them, "What is it you are missing?"

    The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: قَالُوا وَأَقْبَلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ مَاذَا تَفْقِدُونَ (71)

    Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: The sons of Yaʿqūb said, when it was called out to them أَيَّتُهَا الْعِيرُ إِنَّكُمْ لَسَارِقُونَ , and they turned toward the herald and those with him and said to them: مَاذَا تَفْقِدُونَ — what is it that you are missing?

    القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : قَالُوا وَأَقْبَلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ مَاذَا تَفْقِدُونَ (71) قال أبو جعفر: يقول تعالى ذكره: قال بنو يعقوب لما نودوا: أَيَّتُهَا الْعِيرُ إِنَّكُمْ لَسَارِقُونَ ، وأقبلوا على المنادي ومن بحضرتهم يقولون لهم: (ماذا تفقدون) ، ما الذي تفقدون؟.
