The discourse on the explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: يَقْدُمُ قَوْمَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ النَّارَ وَبِئْسَ الْوِرْدُ الْمَوْرُودُ (He shall go before his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them down to the Fire. And what a wretched place is that to which they are led.) — (11:98)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, the Exalted, whose remembrance be glorified, says: يَقْدُمُ — Firʿawn — قَوْمَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — he leads them on, marching with them toward the Fire, so that he brings them into it and makes them burn in its blazing flames. وَبِئْسَ الْوِرْدُ — that is to say: what a wretched place is that to which they are led.
With what we have said concerning this, the scholars of exegesis are in agreement.
Mention of those who said this:
18531 — Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning يَقْدُمُ قَوْمَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — he said: Firʿawn goes before his people on the Day of Resurrection, marching ahead of them until he leads them into the Fire.
18532 — Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning يَقْدُمُ قَوْمَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — he says: he leads his people on, فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ النَّارَ.
18533 — Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: Al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said concerning his words يَقْدُمُ قَوْمَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ — he said: he misled them and thus led them into the Fire.
18534 — Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, he said: Ibn ʿUyayna informed us, on the authority of ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, on the authority of someone who heard Ibn ʿAbbās say concerning his words فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ النَّارَ — he said: "Al-wird" (being led to the Fire) means: the entering into it.
18535 — It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, who said: I heard Abā Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd ibn Sulaymān related to us, he said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning his words فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ النَّارَ — Ibn ʿAbbās used to say: "Al-wird" occurs in the Qurʾān in four places: in Hūd, his words وَبِئْسَ الْوِرْدُ الْمَوْرُودُ; in Maryam: وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلا وَارِدُهَا (Maryam: 71); a "wird" in "The Prophets": حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ أَنْتُمْ لَهَا وَارِدُونَ (Al-Anbiyāʾ: 98); and a "wird" also in "Maryam": وَنَسُوقُ الْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًا (Maryam: 86). Ibn ʿAbbās used to say: All of this means the entering into it. And by Allah, the Hellfire shall surely be entered by both the righteous and the wicked: ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيًّا (Maryam: 72).
