The interpretation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوا إِلَيْهِ إِنَّ رَبِّي رَحِيمٌ وَدُودٌ (And ask your Lord for forgiveness, then turn to Him in repentance; truly my Lord is Merciful, Loving.) [11:90]

Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says, while reporting what Shuʿayb said to his people: (Ask your Lord for forgiveness), O people, for the sins that exist between you and your Lord and in which you persist, namely the worship of gods and idols, and defrauding people of their rights with respect to measures and weights, (then turn to Him in repentance) — that is: then return to His obedience and to keeping to His command and His prohibition — (truly my Lord is Merciful) — that is: He is Merciful toward whoever repents and returns to Him, with respect to punishing him after the repentance — (Loving) — that is: He possesses love for whoever returns to Him and repents; He loves him and holds him dear.
