The statement concerning the explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: قَالُوا لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا لَنَا فِي بَنَاتِكَ مِنْ حَقٍّ وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ (They said: "You know well that we have no right to your daughters, and you know what we desire") (79).
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted be His mention, says: The people of Lūṭ said to Lūṭ: لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ — "O Lūṭ, you know well مَا لَنَا فِي بَنَاتِكَ مِنْ حَقٍّ — for they are not our wives," as in:
18385 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, who said: قَالُوا لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ مَا لَنَا فِي بَنَاتِكَ مِنْ حَقٍّ — that is to say: no wives — وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ .
And His words: وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ — that is to say: They said: "And you, O Lūṭ, know well that our need lies in other than your daughters, and that what we desire is that which you forbid us."
In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
18386 — Mūsā related to me, saying: ʿAmr related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ — "We desire the men."
18387 — Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq: وَإِنَّكَ لَتَعْلَمُ مَا نُرِيدُ — that is to say: "Our desire is for something other than that." But when they would not desist, and his words did not restrain them, and they accepted nothing of what he offered them concerning his daughters, he said: لَوْ أَنَّ لِي بِكُمْ قُوَّةً أَوْ آوِي إِلَى رُكْنٍ شَدِيدٍ (Would that I had power against you, or could betake myself to a strong support).
