He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allah if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss.

The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّي وَآتَانِي مِنْهُ رَحْمَةً فَمَنْ يَنْصُرُنِي مِنَ اللَّهِ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِي غَيْرَ تَخْسِيرٍ (63) (He said: O my people, tell me: if I stand upon a clear proof from my Lord and He has granted me mercy from Himself, who then will protect me against Allah if I disobey Him? Then you would add nothing to me but loss.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted here says: Ṣāliḥ said to his people of Thamūd: يَا قَوْمِ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّي — that is to say: if I stand upon a proof and a clear evidence from Allah which I have come to know and which I know with certainty; وَآتَانِي مِنْهُ رَحْمَةً — that is to say: and if He has granted me from Himself prophethood, wisdom, and Islām;
فَمَنْ يَنْصُرُنِي مِنَ اللَّهِ إِنْ عَصَيْتُهُ — that is to say: who will ward off His punishment from me when He punishes me if I disobey Him, and who will save me from it? فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِي — by the excuse that you advance, namely that you worship what your forefathers worshipped — غَيْرَ تَخْسِيرٍ — loss for you: the loss of your share in the mercy of Allah, as in:
18285. Al-Muthanná related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: فَمَا تَزِيدُونَنِي غَيْرَ تَخْسِيرٍ — he said: you yourselves are only allotted yet more loss.
