Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says: the people of Hūd said to Hūd: O Hūd, you have not come to us with a proof or an argument for what you say, so that we should obey you and acknowledge that you speak the truth in that to which you invite us, namely the oneness of Allah and the acknowledgment of your prophethood. وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِي آلِهَتِنَا — that is to say: we will not abandon our gods on account of your statement, or because of your statement. مَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ — that is to say: they said: we will not believe you in what you claim of prophethood and of being sent by Allah to us.
