The exposition of the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: يَا قَوْمِ لا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلا عَلَى الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ (51)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted announces what Hūd said to his people: O my people, I do not ask you for any compensation or reward for that to which I invite you — namely, being sincere in the worship of Allah and rejecting the idols and dissociating from them. إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلا عَلَى الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي — that is to say: my reward and compensation for my sincere counsel to you and my calling you to Allah rests only with the One who created me. أَفَلا تَعْقِلُونَ — that is to say: do you then not understand that, if through my calling you to Allah I were pursuing something other than sincere counsel and seeking your benefit in the worldly life and the Hereafter, I would then have sought from you some of the enjoyments of this world and would have desired from you wages and reward?
