The explanation of the word of Allah the Exalted: أَمْ يَقُولُونَ افْتَرَاهُ قُلْ إِنِ افْتَرَيْتُهُ فَعَلَيَّ إِجْرَامِي وَأَنَا بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُجْرِمُونَ ("Or do they say: 'He has invented it'? Say: 'If I have invented it, then my guilt is upon me, and I am innocent of the sin you commit'.") (35)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted says: Do these polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people, O Muḥammad, perhaps say: Muḥammad has invented this Qurʾān? And this account about Noah?
Say to them: If I have invented it and contrived and fabricated it.
("Then my guilt is upon me") — He says: Then the sin of my forgery against my Lord rests upon me alone, not upon you. You are not held responsible for my sin, and I am not held responsible for your sin. ("And I am innocent of the sin you commit") — He says: And I am free of the sin and transgression that you commit against your Lord, namely the inventing of lies about Him.
From this verb one says: "ajramtu ijrāman" and "jaramtu ajrimu jarman", as the poet said:
"Cast out by his tribe, captive of his sin, because of what my hand did wrong and my tongue committed."
