1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   As for His word: (''and that you worship none but Allah'') — whoever reads the alif in the word (''innī'') with kasra makes the word ''arsalnā'' operative upon the ''an'' in the phrase ''an lā taʿbudū illā Allāh.'' The meaning then becomes: We sent Noah to his people with the prohibition that they worship none other than Allah, and with the command: ''Say to them: I am for you a clear warner.'' Whoever reads it with fatḥa makes the ''an'' in ''an lā taʿbudū'' refer back to the ''an'' in ''bi-annī.'' The meaning then becomes: We sent Noah to his people with the announcement that I am for you a clear warner, by saying that you may worship none other than Allah.

   By His word: [''that you worship none but Allah, O people''] He means: forsake the worship of the gods and idols, and the making of them associates in His worship. Single out Allah alone and devote worship exclusively to Him, for He has no partner in His creation.

   And His word: (''Indeed I fear for you the punishment of a painful day'') — He says: O people, if you do not choose Allah exclusively for worship and do not single Him out, and do not cast off the rivals and idols beside Him, then I fear for you from Allah the punishment of a day whose torment is painful for whoever is punished on that day.

   He made ''painful'' (alīm) an attribute of ''day'' (yawm), although it is in reality an attribute of ''punishment'' (ʿadhāb), because the punishment takes place therein. Likewise the word: وَجَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ سَكَنًا (''and He made the night a rest'') (Surah Al-Anʿām: 96), although ''rest'' is in reality an attribute of that which rests therein, not of the night itself.

   وقوله: (أن لا تعبدوا إلا الله) فمن كسر الألف في قوله: (إني) جعل قوله: (أرسلنا) عاملا في " أنْ" التي في قوله: (أن لا تعبدوا إلا الله) ، ويصير المعنى حينئذ: ولقد أرسلنا نوحًا إلى قومه، أن لا تعبدوا إلا الله، وقل لهم : إني لكم نذير مبين ، ومن فتحها ردّ " أنْ" في قوله: (أن لا تعبدوا) عليها. فيكون المعنى حينئذ: لقد أرسلنا نوحًا إلى قومه بأني لكم نذير مبين، بأن لا تعبدوا إلا الله. * * * ويعني بقوله: [بأن لا تعبدوا إلا الله أيها الناس]، عبادة الآلهة والأوثان ، (13) وإشراكها في عبادته، وأفردوا الله بالتوحيد ، وأخلصوا له العبادة، فإنه لا شريك له في خلقه. * * * وقوله: (إني أخاف عليكم عذاب يوم أليم)، يقول: إني أيها القوم ، إن لم تخصُّوا الله بالعبادة، وتفردوه بالتوحيد ، وتخلعوا ما دونه من الأنداد والأوثان ، أخاف عليكم من الله عذابَ يوم مؤلم عقابُه وعذابُه لمن عُذِّب فيه. * * * وجعل " الأليم " من صفة " اليوم " وهو من صفة " العذاب "، إذ كان العذاب فيه ، كما قيل: وَجَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ سَكَنًا ، [سورة الأنعام: 96] ، وإنما " السكن " من صفة ما سكن فيه دون الليل. --------------------------- الهوامش : (13) هكذا جاءت الجملة في المخطوطة والمطبوعة ، والسقط فيها ظاهر بين ، وكأن الصواب إن شاء الله : " ويعني بقوله :( أَنْ لَا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا اللَّهَ ) ، أي : اتركوا عبادة الآلهة . . . "
