So do not be in doubt, [O Muhammad], as to what these [polytheists] are worshipping. They worship not except as their fathers worshipped before. And indeed, We will give them their share undiminished.

**The explanation of the interpretation of the word of Allah the Exalted: فَلا تَكُ فِي مِرْيَةٍ مِمَّا يَعْبُدُ هَؤُلاءِ مَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلا كَمَا يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُهُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ (109)**
(So be not in doubt concerning what these worship — they worship only as their fathers worshipped before them; and We shall surely pay them their portion in full, without any diminution.)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah — glory be to His remembrance — addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Be not in doubt, O Muhammad, concerning what these polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people worship of gods and idols — that it is misguidance and falsehood, and that it is the ascribing of partners to Allah (shirk). مَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلا كَمَا يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُهُمْ مِنْ قَبْلُ — that is to say: they worship only as their fathers worshipped before their worship of it. Allah — glory be to His remembrance — informs that they worship the idols which they worship only because they follow the way of their fathers and tread in their tracks in the worship of it — not on the basis of any command from Allah to that effect, nor on the basis of any proof that had become clear to them and that made the worship of it obligatory upon them.
Then Allah — glory be to His praise — informed His Prophet of what He will do with them on account of that worship, and He said — glory be to His praise —: وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ — that is to say: their portion of what I have promised to give them in full, whether it be good or evil — غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ — that is to say: I will withhold nothing from them of what I have promised them; rather, I will fulfill that for them fully and completely — as:
18595 — Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Jābir, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ — he said: "What is promised to them therein, whether it be good or evil."
18596 — Abū Kurayb and Muḥammad ibn Bashshār related to us, they said: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Jābir, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās — the same — except that Abū Kurayb in his narration said: "good or evil."
18597 — Al-Muthanná related to me, saying: Suwayd informed us, saying: Ibn al-Mubārak informed us, on the authority of Sharīk, on the authority of Jābir, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ — he said: "What is decreed for them of good and evil."
18598 — Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Al-Thawrī informed us, on the authority of Jābir, on the authority of Mujāhid, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ — he said: "What befalls them of good or evil."
18599 — Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: وَإِنَّا لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ غَيْرَ مَنْقُوصٍ — he said: "Their portion of the punishment (ʿadhāb)."
