إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَةًۭ لِّمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٌۭ مَّجْمُوعٌۭ لَّهُ ٱلنَّاسُ وَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمٌۭ مَّشْهُودٌۭ

Indeed in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.

    The explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ الآخِرَةِ ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (Indeed, in that is a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter; that is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day that will be witnessed.) (103)

    Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah, the Exalted, says: In the fact that We have struck down those whom We struck down among the inhabitants of the towns whose story We have related to you, O people, in that is a sign — that is to say: a lesson and an admonition — for whoever among His servants fears the punishment (ʿadhāb) and the chastisement of Allah in the Hereafter, and a proof against him before his Lord, and a deterrent that restrains him from disobeying Allah and from transgressing what He has commanded and forbidden him.

    It has also been said that the meaning of this is the following: in that is a lesson for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter, in that Allah will fulfill His promise to him.

    18561 — Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His words إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ الآخِرَةِ (Indeed, in that is a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter): "We will fulfill for them what We promised them in the Hereafter, just as We fulfilled it for the prophets: that We would support them."

    And His words: ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ (that is a Day on which mankind will be gathered) — Allah, the Exalted, says: That Day, that is to say: the Day of Resurrection, is a Day on which mankind will be gathered for it; He says: Allah will raise mankind on that Day from their graves and gather them on it for the requital, the reward, and the punishment. وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (and that is a Day that will be witnessed) — He says: it is a Day that all creatures will attend; none of them will be absent from it. Then at that time vengeance will be taken upon whoever disobeyed Allah, transgressed His command, and called His messengers liars.

    In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have also declared.

    *Mention of those who said this:*

    18562 — Yaʿqūb related to me, saying: Hushaym related to us, on the authority of Abū Bishr, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His words: ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (that is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day that will be witnessed): he said: "the Day of Resurrection."

    18563 — Yaʿqūb related to me, saying: Hushaym related to us, on the authority of Abū Bishr, on the authority of ʿIkrima — the same.

    18564 — Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us; and Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Shuʿba, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Zayd, on the authority of Yūsuf al-Makkī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: "'The witness' is Muḥammad, and 'the witnessed' is the Day of Resurrection." Then he recited: ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (that is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day that will be witnessed).

    18565 — Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: al-Ḥajjāj ibn al-Minhāl related to us, saying: Ḥammād related to us, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Zayd, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: "'The witness' is Muḥammad, and 'the witnessed' is the Day of Resurrection." Then he recited this verse: ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (that is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day that will be witnessed).

    18566 — It has been related to me on the authority of al-Musayyab, on the authority of Juwaybir, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, concerning His words: ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (that is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day that will be witnessed): he said: "That is the Day of Resurrection, on which all creatures are gathered, and which the inhabitants of the heaven and the inhabitants of the earth attend."

    القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِمَنْ خَافَ عَذَابَ الآخِرَةِ ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَجْمُوعٌ لَهُ النَّاسُ وَذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ مَشْهُودٌ (103) قال أبو جعفر: يقول تعالى ذكره: إن في أخذنا من أخذنا من أهل القرى التي اقتصصنا خبرَها عليكم أيها الناس لآية، يقول: لعبرة وعظة (15) ، لمن خاف عقاب الله وعذابه في الآخرة من عباده، وحجةً عليه لربه، وزاجرًا يزجره عن أن يعصي الله ويخالفه فيما أمره ونهاه. * * * وقيل: بل معنى ذلك: إن فيه عبرة لمن خاف عذاب الآخرة ، بأن الله سيفي له بوَعْده. *ذكر من قال ذلك : 18561- حدثني يونس قال، أخبرنا ابن وهب قال، قال ابن زيد في قوله: (إن في ذلك لآية لمن خاف عذاب الآخرة) ، إنا سوف نفي لهم بما وعدناهم في الآخرة ، كما وفينا للأنبياء : أنا ننصرهم. * * * وقوله: (ذلك يوم مجموع له الناس )، يقول تعالى ذكره: هذا اليوم ، يعني يوم القيامة ، (يوم مجموع له الناس) ، يقول: يحشر الله له الناس من قبورهم، فيجمعهم فيه للجزاء والثواب والعقاب ، (وذلك يوم مشهود) ، يقول: وهو يوم تَشهده الخلائق ، لا يتخلَّف منهم أحدٌ، فينتقم حينئذ ممن عصى الله وخالف أمره وكذَّب رُسُلَه. * * * وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. *ذكر من قال ذلك : 18562- حدثني يعقوب قال ، حدثنا هشيم، عن أبي بشر، عن مجاهد في قوله: (ذلك يوم مجموع له الناس وذلك يوم مشهود) ، قال: يوم القيامة. 18563- حدثني يعقوب قال ، حدثنا هشيم، عن أبي بشر، عن عكرمة، مثله. 18564- حدثنا أبو كريب قال ، حدثنا وكيع ، وحدثنا ابن وكيع قال ، حدثنا أبي ، عن شعبة، عن علي بن زيد، عن يوسف المكي، عن ابن عباس قال، " الشاهد "، محمد، و " المشهود "، يوم القيامة. ثم قرأ: (ذلك يوم مجموعٌ له الناس وذلك يوم مشهود). 18565- حدثني المثني قال ، حدثنا الحجاج بن المنهال قال ، حدثنا حماد، عن علي بن زيد، عن ابن عباس قال: " الشاهد "، محمد ، و " المشهود " ، يوم القيامة. ثم تلا هذه الآية: (ذلك يوم مجموع له الناس وذلك يوم مشهود). 18566- حدثت عن المسيب ، عن جويبر، عن الضحاك قوله: (ذلك يوم مجموع له الناس وذلك يوم مشهود) ، قال: ذلك يوم القيامة، يجتمع فيه الخلق كلهم ، ويشهدُه أهل السماء وأهل الأرض. ------------------------- الهوامش : (15) انظر تفسير " آية " فيما سلف من فهارس اللغة ( أيي ) .
