For that is the one who drives away the orphan
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
And His statement: فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ (that is the one who repels the orphan) — that is to say: this is the one who denies the Judgment; he is the one who drives the orphan away from his right and wrongs him. One says concerning this: I repelled so-and-so away from his right (daʿaʿtu fulānan ʿan ḥaqqi-hi), and I repel him (fa-anā adaʿʿu-hu daʿʿan).
In the same vein as what we have said concerning this, spoke also the people of tafsīr (the exegetes).
Below is who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās — فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ: he said: "He drives away the right of the orphan."
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah: يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ: he said: "He repels the orphan and does not feed him."
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda — فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ: that is to say: he forces him down and wrongs him.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda — يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ: he said: "He forces him down and wrongs him."
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, who said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning the word: يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ: he said: "He forces him down."
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning the word: يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ: he said: "He repels him."
